Experimental Investigation of the Characteristics of Steel Slag Ceramsite

Abstract
The steel slag,the fly ash,and the clay are used as the main raw material for the ceramsite preparation to solve the utilization problem of the steel slag.Test results show that with the increase of mass fraction of the slag,the packing density of the ceramsite goes up,the water absorption of the ceramsite gets less,and the cylinder pressure strength becomes stronger.When the mass fraction of steel slag is 10-20%,the high strength ceramsite with the bulk density of 800-1200 kg/m3,and the cylinder pressure strength of 7-13 MPa can be made.SEM-EDS analysis shows that there are a large number of small and insulated pores in the slag ceramsite.It is,therefore,indicated that the ceramsite with the lower density and the higher cylinder pressure strength can be prepared by the steel slag.It is found from XRD analysis that the diopside(CaO · MgO2 · SiO2),hedenbergite(CaO · FeO · 2SiO2),quartz(α-SiO2),as well as the anorthite (CaAl2 · Si208) are the main crystals in the steel slag ceramsite.The presence of these crystals is useful to enhance the strength of the steel slag ceramsite.
